((HT: WKRN-TV Nashville))

A Tennessee State walk-on football player collapsed at practice and eventually died from unknown causes at present.

Defensive back William Wayne Jones collapsed after completing a drill exercise and could not be revived by emergency personnel.

In a statement, TSU Athletics Director Teresa Phillips said:

"This is a very tragic day for our entire Tennessee State University community and we are devastated by the sudden passing of this young man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time. Our University and our football team are hurting as we feel the loss of one of our own. As a team and a family we will grieve alongside the family and do everything we can to help support the family through this very difficult time."

Chris Bundgaard went to Jones' home town of Smyrna to catch up with those who knew him best and longest...

The HQ has a theory and will keep it to ourselves at present. As head coach Rod Reed admitted in the school's press conference, there's only so much he can say- legally- of course...

But with this event happening too many times on high school and college campuses... the HQ wonders aloud when things like this will stop...

Jus' asking...
